Central Ethiopia Regional Health Bureau Profile
The Central Ethiopia region is a region located in the southwestern part of Ethiopia, between 70 04′ to 80 03′ north latitude and 370 20′ to 380 60′ east longitude. Borderers in the north, west and east from the Oromia region; It is bordered by South Ethiopia region in the south direction, South West Ethiopia People’s Region in the southwest direction. In its administrative structure, it is organized into zones, special districts, districts, town administrations and kebeles.
The region has an area of 15,156 square kilometers and accounts for 1.38% of the total area of Ethiopia. It has a population of about 7.2 million in 2017 EC, which is about 6% of the country’s population. The average population density of the region is about 464 people per square km.
The region is currently divided into 7 zones and 3 special woredas with 55 woredas and 27 urban administrations. The region has 1,294 kebeles, of which 185 are urban and 1,109 are rural.
According to the studies, in the region, the annual fertility rate is 27 per 1000 population and it is a region with high population growth (2.6%) and the average number of family members per household is 4.9. It also shows that 47.9% and 48.3% of the total population are under 15 years old and 15 to 65 years old respectively, and only 3.5% are over 65 years old and most of the population is in the young age group. The population growth in terms of gender composition is almost equal between men and women, the data shows that 23.3% are women of reproductive age. About 84% of the region’s population lives in rural areas and most of them are engaged in small-scale agriculture.
The Central Ethiopia region is a region made up of seven zones and three special woredas. These seven zones are East Gurage, Gurage, Hadia, Halaba, Kembata, Silte and Yem. The three special woredas are Kebena, Marekko and Tanbaro. Within each zone there is a hierarchy of district adminstrative structures and under each district structure there is a kebele adminstrative structure. kebele is the smallest administrative unit.
The health service delivery system is composed of three tiers, which are primary, secondary and tertiary health service delivery. At the end of the 2016 fiscal year, 1,067 health posts, 229 health centers and 30 hospitals (2 comprehensive, 4 general, 24 primary level, 4 non-governmental and 1 private) are providing services to the public. The total number of health sector workers in the region is about 13,995.
The vision of the regional health sector is “To see a healthy, productive and prosperous society” and its Mission is “To promote the health and wellbeing of the society through providing and regulating a comprehensive package of health services of the highest possible quality in an equitable manner.” To achieve the mission of the health sector, the following values are selected “Community first, Integrity, loyalty, honesty, Transparency, accountability and confidentiality, Impartiality, Respecting Law, Be a role Model, Collaboration, Professionalism, Change/Innovation and Compassion.” Also, the principles of the health system are quality, equity, accountability, transparency, continuity; Education based and efficient service delivery”.
